Awesome God

"God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen." 1 Timothy 6:15b-16
Back when I was just beginning to read the bible, my friend and I had a discussion about the nature of God, Yahweh. Though many portray God as benevolent and graceful, he mentioned how God had killed many of people of which is clearly indicated in the bible. I remember seeing a website with a collection of the verses on God's wrath. In the background, the song, "Awesome God" was playing. That was his reason of disbelief.
Many years later, I have learned a bit more about the bible, and can probably discuss this matter in a deeper level. However, I sometimes wonder what happened to fear. If you choose to believe what is written in the bible, about the mass killings, would not it be terrifying to let the matter slide and choose ignorance? If God can wipe out nations in a matter of seconds, would it not be wise to acknowledge this God and learn more about Him?

Burial Grounds
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us" Hebrews 12:1
Against a thick fog, the forest hides treasures of old. Only a few convicted souls ever decided to venture out atop this sacred sanctuary. What baggage gathered are all soon lost as the journey reaches its end. The most hallowed. Tombstones. They still shine as if families had just gone by. A presence lingers. Zombies? Ghosts? Such nonsense cannot even possibly be thought of in such a place. The most holy. Those that are buried may have been the heroes of their time. Some may have been the cancer of it all. Despite all the labels the men may have acquired, they all add up to this society, making history. Ancestors are here buried in this place. It is the incarnation of God's promise of blessing that has so far been kept since the beginning. Men of faith, having desperately clung unto a coming kingdom. It stands to speak for the grace of God that has still kept the civilization together. Sentimental? Nay, just realistic. On the journey back, the possessions left are no longer in sight. A path has been set forth. Only one way. Just a matter of walking or not.

A Thankful Heart
The church here at the university is rather small. Worship service is held at the school auditorium. It can hold a lot of people, but it is barely filled each week. I think the church has more professors and faculty than students. In any case, during worship, the praise team is on one side with fancy modern rock instruments and the chamber is on the other side with the classical instruments, the strings and sorts. I have to admit, I enjoy contemporary christian music much more, but I am indeed getting used to the hymns.
I noticed today that during the call to repentance, the chamber played the song, "Give Thanks." I thought it was theological magnificient that they did so. Repentance, at least to me, has been a time when I turn my eyes towards God yet again and recognize all that he has given me, a time of thanksgiving. How else could I change my ways than to be grateful and hopeful?
I still have over 3 years to attend. Though I do not know what will happen, I hope I grow to love the church even more.

성경의 중요성
유학생의 신분으로서 시사에 관심을 갖는 것은 나에게 꽤나 어려운 일이었다. 학교 공부 따라가느라 바쁜 것도 있었지만 남의 나라 일에 집중해서 뭐하나 싶은 생각도 들어서 그랬던 것 같다. 그래도 종종 기억에 남는 일들이 있었는데 그 중 하나는 첫 흑인 대통령이 뽑혔을 때의 일이다. 학교는 선거 스티커로 도배가 되어 있었고 너도나도 홍보용 티셔츠를 입고 다녔다. 또 여러 아이들의 대화의 주제는 선거 이야기로 가득 차 있었다. 특히나 대통령 선거 기간만 되면 연설에 많은 집중이 가는데 미국의 역대 대통령들을 보면 인기가 많고 훌륭한 대접을 받은 대통령들은 대부분 연설을 잘하기로 유명하신 분들이셨다. 하지만 그렇다고 단순히 말을 잘하는 사람을 대통령으로 뽑는 것은 아니다. 오히려 역으로 생각해서 훌륭한 대통령들은 대부분 말을 잘 하더라 라는 생각이 든다.
말을 잘 한다는 것은 무엇일까? 논리 정연하게 자신의 의견을 제시하고 많은 사람들의 공감대를 형성하여 자신의 생각을 전달하여 때로는 찬성 때로는 반대 의견으로 이끌어 나가는 것이 아닐까 생각해본다. 하지만 그 어떤 말에도 가장 핵심적인 것이 있다면 바로 실천여부인 것 같다. 아무리 말을 잘해도 그에 대한 책임을 지지 않는 다면 빈 소리요 흩날려 지는 소음이 될 뿐이다. 하지만 이 사실은 현 시대에는 크게 다가오는 부분이 아닌 것 같다. 이전 시대에는 문서나 법적 규제가 없었기에 자신이 하는 말 그 자체가 곧 계약이 되었다는 이야기도 있는데 요즘엔 약속 하나 지키는 사람이 대단한 사람인 마냥 떠받들어 지고 있는 것이 현실이다.
그래도 이러한 한 마디의 말이 아직 어느 정도 힘이 남아있는 곳이 있다면 바로 군대가 아닐까 생각한다. 물론 수많은 문서작업도 이루어지지만 대다수의 명령은 곧 그 날 하루의 일과요 맡긴 책임이 되는 것이다. 혹시 전쟁 중에서는 특히나 윗사람의 말을 잘 듣고 행하는 것이 삶과 죽음의 차이가 될 수도 있을 것 같다. 굳이 이야기 하자면 성경에도 이와 같은 권세에 대해 이야기하기도 한다.
“예수께서 가버나움에 들어가시니 한 백부장이 나아와 간구하여 이르되 주여 내 하인이 중풍병으로 집에 누워 몹시 괴로워하나이다 이르시되 내가 가서 고쳐 주리라 백부장이 대답하여 이르되 주여 내 집에 들어오심을 나는 감당하지 못하겠다오니 다만 말씀으로만 하옵소서 그러면 내 하인이 낫겠사옵나이다 나도 남의 수하에 있는 사람이요 내 아래에도 군사가 있으니 이르라 가라 하면 가고 저더러 오라 하면 오고 내 종더러 이것을 하라 하면 하나이다 예수께서 들으시고 놀랍게 여겨 따르는 자들에게 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 이스라엘 중 아무에게서도 이만한 믿음을 보지 못하였노라...예수께서 백부장에게 이르시되 가라 네 믿은 대로 될지어다 하시니 그 즉시 하인이 나으니라“ 마태복음 8:5-10, 13
혹 로마 역사에 별 관심이 없으신 분들을 위해 얘기하자면 백부장은 쉽게 말해 자기 밑에 100명의 사람을 거느린다는 의미로 지휘를 뜻하는 용어이다. 어느 정도의 사회적 지휘가 있는 사람이 자기의 종을 위해 무언가를 하는 것부터 매우 놀라운 이야기이지만 거기에 더해 예수님께서는 이 사람의 믿음을 칭찬하신다. 이는 이 백부장은 말의 권세를 알고 있어서가 아닐까 생각해본다. 하나님께서 진정 세상 모든 것을 주관하시는 그 권세를 쥐고 계셔서 말씀만 하시면 이 모든 것이 아우러져 주의 뜻대로 이루질 것이란 것을 알고 있었나보다.
우리는 간혹 하나님을 보기 원한다는, 그 음성을 듣기 원한다는 투정을 부린다. 답답하고 억울하고 모르겠으니 속 시원한 답을 듣기 위해 맹목적인 눈에 보이지 않는 어떤 무언가를 집는 심정이 아닐까 생각한다. 하지만 성경의 다른 구절들을 보면 이 일이 그렇게 단순한 일은 아니란 것을 알게 된다.
“모세가 가로되 원컨대 주의 영광을 내게 보이소서 여호와께서 가라사대 내가 나의 모든 선한 형상을 네 앞으로 지나게 하고 여호와의 이름을 네 앞에 반포하리라 나는 은혜 줄 자에게 은혜를 주고 긍휼이 여길 자에게 긍휼을 베푸느니라 또 가라사대 네가 내 얼굴을 보지 못하리니 나를 보고 살 자가 없음이니라” 출애굽기 33:18-20
이렇듯 그 유명한 모세 역시도 하나님을 만나는 것은 곧 죽음을 뜻했다. 하지만 그렇다고 하나님의 형상이나 음성을 듣는 것 역시도 꼭 죽음을 얘기하진 않는다. 성경 수많은 인물들이 하나님의 형상이나 하나님의 천사들 혹은 꿈에서의 환상 또는 음성으로 나타나실 때가 기록되어있다. 하지만 그런 일이 각자의 삶 속에 일어나는 일은 정말 너무나도 드물다. 뒤돌아보며 할 수 있는 이야기이지만 만약 철이 덜 들고 세상을 잘 알지 못했을 때 이런 신비한 일이 있었다면 잘못된 사상과 이단에 빠지기 쉬웠을 것 같다. 그러나 하나님께서는 그렇게 세상 이치를 늘 거스르시면서 역사하시지 않으신다. 하나님께서 만드셨는데 굳이 그걸 다시 바꾸시면서 행하셔야 할까. 그렇다면 어찌할까? 성경이 아마 그 답이 아닐까 생각한다.
“태초에 말씀이 계시니라 이 말씀이 하나님과 함께 계셨으니 이 말씀은 곧 하나님이시니라 그가 태초에 하나님과 함께 계셨고 만물이 그로 말미암아 지은 바 되었으니 지은 것이 하나도 그가 없이는 된 것이 없느니라” 요한복음 1:1-3

오늘의 결론은 간단하다. 성경을 읽어보라. 사실 하고 싶던 이야기는 단순이 이것인 것 같다. 기독교 신앙은 지극히 현실적인 것이다. 결코 뜬 구름 잡는 신앙이 아닌 것이다. 빵 몇 조각을 몇 백명이 나눠 먹은 것이 아니고 사실 숨겨두었던 빵을 각자 먹어서 다들 먹었다 얘기하는 것이 아니고 정말 말 그대로 빵이 계속 생겨난 것이다. 예수님께서 아직 안 죽으셨다 며칠 만에 회복되어 나오신 게 아니고 정말 죽었다 다시 살아나신 것이다.
삶의 수많은 궁금증들이 한 순간에 다 풀릴 기대는 안한다. 무엇이든 순식간에 생긴 것은 유지되기 어렵기 때문이다. 더 많은 시간을 투자하고 더 깊은 묵상으로 성경의 한 글자 한 글자 읽다보면 또 무슨 뜻인지 알아보려 노력하다 보면 하나님께서 크고 은밀한 비밀들을 다 알려주시리라 믿는다.

삶의 수많은 궁금증들이 한 순간에 다 풀릴 기대는 안한다. 무엇이든 순식간에 생긴 것은 유지되기 어렵기 때문이다. 더 많은 시간을 투자하고 더 깊은 묵상으로 성경의 한 글자 한 글자 읽다보면 또 무슨 뜻인지 알아보려 노력하다 보면 하나님께서 크고 은밀한 비밀들을 다 알려주시리라 믿는다.

이정도면 확실히 들리시리라 믿는다. 지금 이 순간부터 하나님의 말씀에 귀 기울여 보실 수 있으신가?
P.S. 혹시나 이렇게 생각하는 분들을 위해 조심스레 적어본다. 성경도 따지고 보면 적은 글인데 하나님의 입에서 나온 말씀이 아니지 않은가 생각한다면 나도 어느 정도 동의한다. 하지만 이 말씀들이 글로 남겨진 이유는 사실 하나님께서 지금도 계속 말씀하고 계시지만 우리의 듣는 귀가 무뎌져 글로라도 읽어라 하시는 뜻이 아닐까 생각해본다.

Loving Family
Back when I was
a student abroad, I had left home too early to understand just what family
meant. Having spent so many years back at home now, I have learned how to yearn
and love. Just yesterday my brother left home to finish his education. It will
be another year or so until I see him, and well, I gently miss him, just gently.
I enjoyed
watching “Malcolm in the Middle” years ago. I actually had the chance to watch
clips of the last episode, and I was amazed. It is rare to be moved by a TV
show, but I am sure I cried a little inside. Aside all the problems and
troubles the family faced, they were held together in love and great
expectations.
We often misunderstand those that are close, the ones that truly love, whether it is personal difficulties or challenges in expressing it. Patience is a lost art, but patience is the only way to find love.

Collective Soul
What is amazing
about fellowship is that it gets better and better with more people.
Individuals bring what small fragments of God’s faint scent into light. As it
is added more and more, we are soon completely smothered in His love, together
as one.
The Old Testament
spotlights individuals often: a man and the relationship with God. Soon,
however, we are led to the New Testament, which gently hides the great beauty
of fellowship. Peter? Paul? Were they not individuals only traveling with a
couple of people? Sure, but they were messengers. It is because of the
mountainous mass of Christians that held base the lines written in the
scripture that these men were taken to heart. It is so easy to lose sight of
the churches that held on together, praying desperately for one another and for
the coming of Jesus.
I, too,
acknowledge the importance of one on one relationship with God that no one else
can dive into. Maybe it is the majority of a Christian life, but it will never
be completely unless you are held together, hand to hand, with fellow Christians.

Hezekiah and Time
"Time or age doesn’t necessarily make us any better. Consider that time does nothing but pass away. We sometimes say, 'time will tell,' 'time will heal,' or 'time will bring out the potential in me.' But time will do nothing of the sort! Time will only come and go. It is only how we use time that matters. Hezekiah didn’t make good use of the extra time the Lord gave him."
