Literally everything.

Thought of the Day #540321

Medical school is fast coming to an end. Just several more weeks of rotations, and I'll be mostly studying for the board exam. 

The past two weeks were spent in the emergency ward. Emergency. Patients ranging from minor worries to life threatening conditions come and go. The health insurance policy is highly people-friendly here, hence the low threshold in visiting the hospital. 

Occasional suicide patients come briskly through the doors, mostly from poisoning. Some come with cardiac arrests, others simply unconscious. Nonetheless, they are quickly brought forth for intubation, venous catheterization, evaluation and the sorts. 

God allows some people to get better, to see their family once more. Others, I guess He has other plans, but it is quite difficult in letting people off life support. They are kept alive by the strides of modern medicine, but more so simply alive than living. 

I wondered if such was what God sees in us: completely dead inside, simply kept alive by the hand of God. Perhaps in hopes of waking up, perhaps giving enough time for loved ones to say goodbye, perhaps miracle of salvation.

   군중은 어부들이 들여올 수산물을 서로 먼저 고르려고 벌써부터 아우성이다. 하지만 그날의 바다는 인색하다. 배마다 텅 비어 들어온다. 
   그날 아침 예수님은 기회를 잡아 무리를 가르치신다. 그분의 가르침은 서기관이나 바리새인과는 완전히 다르다. 그분은 사람들이 알아듣지도 못할 말을 곤봉처럼 휘두르지 않으신다. 그저 빛 앞에 말씀을 들어 올리실 뿐이다. 그렇게 말씀을 치켜드시면 칙칙한 군중 위로 오색찬란한 무지갯빛 소망이 쏟아져 내린다. 새 나라의 빛깔이 여명의 첫 홍조를 피워 올린다.

   어부 베드로도 그날 아침 바다에서 빈손으로 돌아온다. 피곤하지만, 그물을 정리해야 한다. 그는 그물 앞에 웅크리고 앉아 가늘고 미끌미끌한 해초를 뜯어낸다. 어느덧 떠오르는 햇살에 어깨의 냉기가 사르르 풀린다.
   형제인 안드레가 일전에 그를 처음으로 예수님께 데려왔다. 안드레는 예수님이 하나님의 어린양이라는 세례 요한의 말을 베드로에게 전하며 그분이 메시아라고 말했다. 예수님이 가버나움의 여러 회당과 바닷가에서 가르치실 때 베드로는 그분을 따라다녔다. 듣는 대로 모두 지중해의 해면처럼 쏙쏙 빨아들였다. 지금도 그는 무심코 그물을 한 코씩 씻어 나가면서 예수님의 말씀을 빨아들이고 있다.
   열띤 무리가 점점 바짝 조여들어 해변에 예수님이 서실 자리가 없다. 그러자 그분은 베드로의 배에 올라 조금 거리를 띄우도록 청하신다. 거구의 어부는 스승의 당부에 재빨리 응해 저만치 노를 저어 나간 뒤 닻을 내린다. 배의 건너편에서 반짝이는 햇살을 받아 부채꼴 모양의 수면 위로 금빛 잔물결이 부서지고, 배에서 해안까지 아른거리는 그 길을 따라 예수님의 말씀이 다시금 무리의 귓전에 다다른다. 
   예수님은 뱃머리에 계시고, 베드로는 가운데에 앉아 마치 생선의 싱싱한 속살을 떠내듯 머리속으로 칼질하며 그분의 말씀을 한마디도 놓치지 않는다. 예쑤님이 무리에게 주시는 말씀은 이윽고 끝났으나 베드로에게는 아직 아니다. 그분은 베드로 배의 선장이라도 되신 듯 명령하신다. "깊은 데로 가서 그물을 내려 고기를 잡아라." 
   우락부락한 어부는 무례를 범하지 않으려고 조심스레 말을 골라 입을 뗀다. "선생님." 이 스승의 관할 영역이 얼마나 넓고 얼마나 깊은지 그로서는 알 턱이 없다. "우리들이 밤이 새도록 수고하였으되 잡은 것이 없지마는...."
   사실은 이런 생각을 한다. '주님, 죄송하지만 제 직업이 어부입니다. 어부라면 누구나 알 듯, 고기를 잡으려면 고기가 먹이를 먹으려고 깊은 데서 수면으로 올라오는 밤에 잡아야 합니다. 해가 뜨면 고기가 밑으로 깊이 내려가 그물에 닿지 않는다는 것은 어부라면 누구나 아는 상식입니다.'
   하지만 베드로는 예수님을 존경하기에 그런 생각을 감춘다. 그저 그분의 말씀을 존중하는 마음으로 순종한다. "말씀에 의지하여 내가 그물을 내리겠습니다.." 품꾼들이 깊은 데로 노를 저어 가는 동안 베드로는 약간 바보가 된 기분이 들지만 아무 말도 하지 않는다. 예수님도 침묵을 지키시다가 큰 소리로 말씀하신다. "멈추어라. 여기다. 여기가 좋은 자리다."

   일꾼들은 묵직한 그물을 들어 올려 바다에 쫙 펴지게 던진다. 그물이 가라앉고 나자 침묵만 흐른다. 베드로는 예수님 옆에서 밧줄을 잡고 있다. 노련한 어부로서 참 민망한 순간이다. 그는 애써 예수님과 일꾼들을 외면한 채 바다만 노려보고 있다.
   그때 저 멀리서 뭔가 당기는 힘이 느껴진다. 그 느낌은 자꾸만 되풀이된다. 갑자기 그물이 살아나 그들의 손안에서 춤을 춘다. 수면에 세찬 소용돌이가 일더니 고기 떼가 물살을 때리며 햇살에 반짝인다. 어부들이 그물을 힘껏 잡아당기는 사이에, 꼬였던 그물코가 여기저기 툭툭 터진다. "어이, 야고보! 요한!" 베드로가 소리쳐 동업자를 부른다. "빨리 좀 오게. 고기가 너무 많이 잡혀 그물이 찢어지고 있네! 어서!"
   하늘에는 왜가리, 두루미, 가마우지가 꽥꽥 울어 대며 어지럽게 맴돈다. 언제라도 쏜살같이 달려들어 고기를 낚아챌 태세다. 여태 장정들은 그물과 줄다리기를 벌이고 있다. 인대와 힘줄이 늘어날 대로 늘어나 어깻죽지가 화끈거릴 정도다. 손바닥은 밧줄에 쓸려 얼얼하고, 근육이 뒤틀려 땀구멍마다 땀이 삐질삐질 새어 나온다. 오가는 말까지 탁탁 끊어진다. "조심 조심.... 이쪽으로.... 그렇지.... 찬찬히.... 힘 좀 빼고...."
   다른 배가 다다르자 어부들이 힘을 합해 은빛 고기 떼로 터질 듯한 그물을 빈 선체에 쏟는다. 그러나 어획략이 워낙 많아 왼쪽 가장자리가 수면 아래로 잠기면서 배 안에 바닷물이 흘러든다. 일꾼들은 미친 듯이 물을 퍼내고, 고기를 집어 던진다. 다들 그러고 있는데 베드로만 예외다.
   날카로운 깨달음이 베드로의 영혼을 흝고 지나면서 그는 그 자리에 얼어붙는다. '이분은 그냥 인간이 아니시다. 이분의 통치 영역은 바닷속 심연에까지 이른다.' 베드로는 돌아서서 예수님을 본다. 둘의 시선이 마주치는 순간, 갑자기 베드로의 어두컴컴한 마음속 심연이 표면으로 끌어 올려진다. 그는 자신이 예수님과 한 배를 탈 자격조차 없음을 깨닫는다. 떨리는 몸으로 점벙점벙 물을 튀기며 예수님께 다가와 그분 무릎 아래에 엎드린다. "주님, 나를 떠나십시오. 나는 죄인입니다." 선원들은 걷잡을 수 없는 경외감에 전율하며 스승의 반응을 기다린다. 그런데 예쑤님의 말씀은 벼락처럼 무섭지 않다. 오히려 차분하며 약속으로 가득하다. "무서워하지 마라. 이후로는 네가 사람을 취하리라."
   마침내 그들이 해안에 이르는 순간, 베드로의 어부 인생은 그것으로 끝난다. 그는 꾸준한 수입이 보장된 사업, 자산 가치가 있는 사업, 미래가 있는 사업을 버리고 떠난다. 한 번도 뒤돌아보지 않고, 한 번도 손해를 따져보지 않는다. 베드로는 배와 그물과 고기를 버리고 예수님을 얻는다. 이는 결국 그의 평생에 걸쳐 가장 잘한 결정임이 증명된다.

Daily Confessions

Yet another confession that I bring to you, my father, my Lord.

I still do not hear Your nor revere You.

I find myself climbing high among others, forgetting humility whatsoever.

Character of God: 1 Samuel, Ezekiel

"The people all said to Samuel, 'Pray to the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.'
'Do not be afraid,' Samuel replied. 'You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart." 1 Samuel 12:19-20

"Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign Lord. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?" Ezekiel 18:23

In 1 Samuel 12, the Israelites asked Samuel for a king to lead the nation, despite God having led them all this time. It was a sure sign of their lack of faith and obedience to God. It is made clear especially as the Israelites refer to the LORD as "your God" to Samuel. It should have been their own God as well. Despite the sin of the people, God simply demands that they from now on obey the Lord. 

In Ezekiel, God resounds judgment on all nations, yet, He remarks that he does not delight it the death of people. Rather, he insists that all turn their ways and praise Him. 

It is as with such verses that we are able to see the loving character of God. He remembers not the past, and simply demands the righteousness in the present. He is not a destructive king, but a loving one who wants the nations to turn back to Him.
